Jeffrey HoffmanThese and other questions dominated the debate following the lectures at the event Mars Breath and Space Exploration, held on September 14, 2024, at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at Jagiellonian University. The event drew a large audience, including not only students and scientists but also space enthusiasts hungry for knowledge. Attendees had the unique opportunity to engage directly with the speakers, including the special guest - Jeffrey Hoffman, an American astronaut and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who has participated in five space shuttle missions and spacewalks.

Hoffman shared his unique experiences, including stories about repairing the Hubble Space Telescope, sparking numerous questions from the audience.

Event announcement

On September 14, 2024, the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University will become a place where science and space join forces to uncover the mysteries of the Universe and the future of Mars exploration. The event, Breath of Mars and Space Exploration, will bring together leading experts, with the keynote speaker being Jeffrey Hoffman, an American astronaut and MIT professor, renowned for his participation in five NASA space shuttle missions and key orbital operations. As a NASA crew member, he became the first astronaut to spend 1,000 hours aboard the space shuttle.

Professor Hoffman's stories about the MOXIE experiment, which transforms Martian carbon dioxide into oxygen, will offer an unforgettable insight into future manned missions to Mars.

In addition to the American astronaut's lecture, you will have the opportunity to hear inspiring talks by prominent Jagiellonian University scientists: Prof. Sebastian Szybka will reveal the secrets of the birth of the Universe, and Dr. Michał Drahus will present his groundbreaking space project, HYADES.

Don't miss the chance to participate in a debate with all the speakers, witness live demonstrations of Martian rovers and wind tunnels, and explore fascinating research projects conducted at our University.

The event partners include the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Jagiellonian University Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences, Planetary Lab, and Fiction Lab.
